Several prominent conservatives have called upon John Kerry to resign as Secretary of State in the wake of his comment last week that Israel could become an Apartheid state. These conservatives include Charles Krauthammer, Ted Cruz, and Michele Bachmann.
While the sights and sounds of Kerry having to exit the Obama Administration are tantalizing, his departure would not be without its downside. Whatever satisfaction one might get from a Kerry resignation it would be short-lived. How many people are still stoked that Kathleen Sebelius resigned as HHS Secretary three weeks ago? As I pointed out at the time, Sebelius might be gone but Obamacare is still here and not going anywhere anytime soon.
By the same token if Kerry resigns, Obama’s foreign policy remains intact as does his disdain towards Israel. It’s not like Obama is going to appoint John Bolton to succeed Kerry. Chances are Obama would appoint someone with even more visceral hostility towards Israel than Kerry. If Kerry were to resign the odds are Obama would appoint current UN Ambassador Samantha Power to succeed him.
This would be the same Samantha Power who once called upon the United States to invade Israel. In so doing, Power said the U.S. had to be willing to put something on the line even if it “might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import.” By domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import, Power meant Jews. From where I sit calling upon the U.S. to invade Israel is worse than calling Israel an Apartheid state.
Let me put it another way. If John Kerry were to resign tonight I would not lose a moment’s sleep. Kerry would have no one but himself to blame for his incompetence and ineptness. But as long as President Obama is in charge of our foreign policy, our health care and everything else things will get much worse before they get better.
