This Isn’t The First Squirrel to Run on The Field

Like Larry Thornberry, I saw the squirrel dart out in front of homeplate during Game 4 of the NLDS between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals last night.

But this isn’t the first time a rodent with a furry tail has made its way onto the field of play during a game. In September 2008, a squirrel found its way onto Progressive Field during the ninth inning of a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox. Given how it lowered itself to the ground it was obvious he had been watching Asdrubal Cabrera patrolling second base.

Still, the squirrel in Cleveland wasn’t brazen enough to cross in front of home plate during an at bat. The grounds crew in Cleveland also got the squirrel to leave the field. The St. Louis squirrel jumped into the stands.

No word if the squirrel snuck onto the Cardinals flight to Philadelphia where Game 5 will be played tomorrow night.
