The Problem of Insincere Friends Like Morocco

Morocco epitomizes the problem of regimes which present themselves as pro-Western but which disparage Western values.  There’s reason for cooperation on issues of common interest, but there should be no illusions about the character of the regimes.

For instance, Morocco recently tossed out Christians who organized an orphanage.  Reports BBC:

Morocco says it will take a tough line on proselytism – seeking converts from another religion – two days after it expelled 20 Christian workers.

Communications Minister Khalid Naciri warned that the government would be “severe with all those who play with religious values”.

Religious freedom is guaranteed under Moroccan law but proselytism is banned.

Some Christian groups claim the authorities are deliberately trying to restrict their work in the country.

The expelled Christians had run a children’s home called Village of Hope near the town of Ain Leuh in the Middle Atlas mountains.

It’s odd, but I’m not aware of any “Christian” government which bans proseltyzing.  Yet such prohibitions are common throughout the Muslim world.  Only regimes afraid of their people hearing the truth would enact such a restriction.  Minister Naciri should come clean about what is really motivating the government to close down an orphanage.
