I think the Republicans have benefited in a lot of ways by not having a clearly identifiable leader. It has allowed them to run against the “mess in Washington,” a position from which the GOP has always excelled, without having to defend an unpopular leader like George W. Bush or Newt Gingrich. But it is times like these summits where the Republicans could use someone who could go to toe-to-toe with Barack Obama as a communicator, even if people are getting tired of the president’s bloviating. It’s a pretty sad statement that the only Republican leader who has been able to consistently mix it up effectively with Obama is the entirely unelectable Dick Cheney.
UPDATE: I should revise and extend my remarks along the same lines as Quin — I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the health care summit. Phil has seen the whole thing, so if he says the Republicans are acquitting himself well, I’m inclined to believe him.
