The Disappearing Pro-Life Democrat, Cont’d

In his column today, Bill McGurn is right about what Bart Stupak has wrought. The sad irony is that the pro-life Democrats had unprecedented leverage within their party, when even many pro-choice liberals feared the abortion issue was hurting their party. But time and again, they have used that leverage only to secure symbolism, whether it is in the Democratic platform or the health care debate. By continually choosing to prioritize being Democrats over being pro-life, the pro-life Democrats’ window of opportunity is firmly closed.

Here’s my own take on this odd phenomenon. And here’s my dispatch from the pro-life Democrats’ meeting at the 2008 convention in Denver.
