Steve Sabol, one half of the father-son duo which founded NFL Films, passed away today after an 18 month battle with brain cancer. He was two weeks shy of his 70th birthday.

Sabol and his father Ed changed the way Americans watch football with their use of slow motion, montages and wiring players and coaches for sound. They gave football a third dimension which could be understood by the casual fan.

I leave you with “The Autumn Wind”, a poem composed Sabol which is the unofficial theme song of the Oakland Raiders.
