Spike Lee Does The Wrong Thing

In an act of sheer stupidity, film director Spike Lee retweeted a tweet which purportedly contained the address of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin in Florida last month.

Well, as it turned out, the address in question was not that of Zimmerman but that of an elderly couple who had to flee their home in fear for their lives.

Lee subsequently apologized for his actions. But somehow that doesn’t seem to be quite adequate.

Why would he even entertain the idea? What did Lee hope this stunt would accomplish? For someone to drive by and shoot out their windows? Suppose it had been Zimmerman’s address? I don’t think Lee would be apologizing at all. At best, it was an act of mischief. At worst, it was an act of reckless endangerment and incitement. It’s going to take a hell of lot more than an apology to undo the damage he’s done.

Spike Lee did the wrong thing. If he truly wants to do the right thing then he will tell people to leave George Zimmerman alone and let the special prosecutor in Florida do her job without fear and intimidation.
