Who would have imagined? David Rothkopf is shocked, horrified even, that Barack Obama lied about providing real change in Washington.
Bad enough that the president appointed a bunch of self-interested, money-grubbing rich people. Writes Rothkopf on Foreign Policy online:
Worse, the president has let monied interests infect his administration in an even more insidious way. First, having raised more money than any presidential candidate in history, he played a role in actually enhancing what was already the most corrupting influence in American politics — the dependence of office holders on the rich. While the president often spoke of the small dollar donations to his campaign, you don’t raise three quarters of a billion dollars without large aggregations of bigger checks.
Imagine. A former Chicago politician tossed aside the public financing goos goos and broke all campaign spending records. To do so, this talented pol relied on rich and influential friends to raise money and in turn rewarded those who supported him. Instead of choosing the best and brightest, this crusader for change and defender of the disadvantaged appointed the richest and friendliest to office.
Who would have imagined?
