Mitt Romney has ceded South Carolina to Newt Gingrich.
It is a rather bitter concession speech. Without naming Gingrich, Romney essentially said if you criticize him, not only are you are criticizing free enterprise but you are criticizing the voters. It’s all rather unbecoming.
I can’t say I’m terribly surprised by the result. More than two months ago I was skeptical of Romney’s chances in South Carolina even if he won in both Iowa and New Hampshire. Well, up until a couple of days ago, Romney had won both Iowa and New Hampshire and is now losing South Carolina by 15%.
Mitt Romney may still yet win the nomination but I think tonight’s results convincingly state that he is definitvely not inevitable.
