A week ago, I
noted that the Boston Red Sox had lost four games in a row. I further noted this losing streak was significant in that the Red Sox did not have a losing streak longer than three games during their World Series title year in 2013.
Well, a week later, this losing streak is now at 10 games. It is their longest losing streak in 20 years. This slide began on May 15th with an extra inning loss to the Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox then returned home to be swept by both the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays. A flight to St. Petersburg did not improve their fortunes as they were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Not surprisingly
tempers flared on the Red Sox bench today when back up catcher David Ross took exception to Yunel Escobar going to third on defensive indifference following a two-run double in the 7th which had given the Rays an 8-3 lead following a pinch-hit three-run HR by Sean Rodriguez. This would clear the benches and result in a physical altercation between Rodriguez, Escobar, and Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes. All three would be ejected from the game. The Sox did rally for two runs in the ninth, but again it was not enough as they lost 8-5.
It won’t get any easier as the Sox head to Atlanta for two games against the NL East leading Braves. Will Big Papi play both games at first? The Braves will then come to Boston for two games on Wednesday and Thursday. Next weekend, the Rays come into Fenway and I am sure warnings will be issued before the first pitch on Friday, especially if the Sox haven’t been able to buy a win.
It’s hard to believe Boston was celebrating a World Series championship six months ago.
