It was a crazy day at Yawkey Way.
Today’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox lasted over six hours and went 17 innings with the O’s winning 9-6.
The winning pitcher was the DH Chris Davis. He went 0 for 8 at the plate with five strikeouts and hit into a double play. Davis came very close to being the losing pitcher. After retiring the first two hitters in the top of the 16th, Marlon Byrd reached base on an error by third baseman Wilson Betemit. Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles hit a double off the center field wall but J.J. Hardy threw a perfect strike to home plate and Matt Wieters tagged out Byrd.
Darnell McDonald, the Red Sox DH turned pitcher, wasn’t so fortunate. He struggled with his control and when he did a get a pitch near the strike zone Adam Jones slammed it into the Monster Seats to give the O’s a 9-6 lead. To add insult to injury, McDonald hit into a double play to end the game.
I am watching the post-game press conference with Sox manager Bobby Valentine. He looks like he’s about to burst into tears. After winning six in a row, the Red Sox got swept by the Orioles (including a 13-inning loss on Friday night) and have lost five in a row. It’s going to be a long flight to Kansas City.
