Kerry Flip-Flops on Palestinian Recognition of Israel as a Jewish State
by

Today, John Kerry did what he does best — he flipped-flopped.

This time he flip-flopped on Israel’s demand that the Palestinian Authority recognize it as a Jewish state. The Secretary of State said it was “a mistake” for Israel to raise the issue.

But just over two months ago, Kerry was pressing PA President Mahmoud Abbas to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and, at the end of January, Thomas Friedman of the New York Times reported that one of the elements of the framework for peace (a.k.a. The Kerry Plan) was for Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.

So I guess you could say that Kerry was for Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state before he was against it.

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised by this turn of events. A shift in the Obama Administration’s position was apparent a few days ago when Jen Psaki, a top official in the State Department, said in an interview with a Palestinian newspaper, “There is no need for the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.” Here was part of my response to her statement:

It could be that Psaki was freelancing. But it is far more likely that Psaki’s statement represents a shift in Obama Administration policy. In which case, either Obama or Kerry (possibly both) will tell Israel to drop its demand that the PA recognize it as a Jewish state.

So Kerry has chimed in as I anticipated he would and it is quite possible that Obama might see fit to reinforce this position.

Once again it will be left to Israel to be forced to make painful concessions just to get the Palestinian Authority to the table. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority is free to incite hatred against Israel in its schools, its state run media and in its religious institutions with impunity.

No peace can come from such an agreement. Then again the Obama Administration is far more interested in a peace agreement than in peace.
