Hannah Montana Sings Dylan

I have to give Miley Cyrus props for her cover of Bob Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”, one of his songs from his legendary 1975 album Blood on the Tracks. It has a nice, understated country feel to it.

Cyrus’ cover is one of 75 Dylan songs on a tribute album titled Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International which was released today. O.K., I’m not crazy about the Amnesty International part when you consider their advocacy of Islamic radicals like Moazzam Begg and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. As much as I like Dylan’s music, I will not be buying this album.

Nevertheless, I am curious about some of the other tracks on the album. Diana Krall does a marvelous version of “A Simple Twist of Fate” (also from Blood on the Tracks) while Sting’s rendition of “Girl from the North Country” is 180 degrees removed from Dylan’s duet with Johnny Cash off Nashville Skyline but is no less compelling. I’m also curious about other tracks like “Just Like a Woman” by Carly Simon, “I’d Have You Anytime” by actress Evan Rachel Wood (which Dylan co-wrote with the late George Harrison) and “Gotta Serve Somebody” by Eric Burdon which I haven’t been able to find online at this point. But Dylan is certainly no stranger to the former frontman for the Animals & WAR who did a cover of “One More Cup of Coffee” many, many years before Miley Cyrus was born.
