Giffords to Resign from Congress
by

Gabrielle Giffords has announced she will resign her Congressional seat later this week.

Before her resignation takes effect, Giffords plans to travel to Washington to attend President Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

More than a year has passed since she was shot in the head by Jared Loughner, whose madness resulted in the deaths of six people. Although Giffords recovery has progressed, it has not progressed to a point where she felt she could stand for re-election. When I wrote about did interview Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly did with Diane Sawyer last November, I noted that serving in Congress is a challenge for the healthiest amongst us. Many who commented on that blog post indicated it would be both in her best interests and those of her constituents if she were to step down. For her part, Giffords hopes to return to public service in the future. Whether that public service will take the form of elected office remains to be seen.

Whatever she chooses to do, I wish Gabby Giffords well in her continued recovery.
