Thoughts on Rick Santorum
by

I cannot say I am surprised at this development. Indeed, I was only off by 24 hours and that speculation was written prior to his youngest daughter’s latest hospitalization.

Nevertheless, Rick Santorum gave it his best and exceeded all expectations including his own. It is well worth remembering that a month before the Iowa Caucus, Santorum was polling in single digits behind Michele Bachmann. His wins a month later in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri proved Iowa was no fluke. Santorum gave Romney a scare in Michigan but ultimately did not pull off the upset and began a slow fade despite a respectable showing on Super Tuesday. Indeed, he had my vote on Super Tuesday.

At times, Santorum could be his own worst enemy whether it was complaining about not being asked enough questions during some of the earlier debates or his recent confrontation with New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny. But at other times, he spoke from the heart and this quality more than anything else got him as far as it took him. But his heart wasn’t enough to stop the juggernaut of negative ads by Mitt Romney and the prospect of losing big in Pennsylvania.

If Romney beats Obama in 2012, I think Santorum would be one hell of an Ambassador to the UN.

If Obama beats Romney, it does open a door for 2016 but I think Santorum would face a tougher field that could include the likes of Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Allen West and Bobby Jindal.

At this point, it really doesn’t matter whether Newt drops out or not. It’s game on between Obama and Romney and the fight is already well under way.
