In an utterly out-of-touch move this morning, the State Department decided to devote its social media presence to the dire threats faced by our oceans using the hashtag #OceanChat. As Iraq burns and veterans die waiting for health care at clinics across the country, the brain trusts at the State Department spent the better part of the morning addressing this issue with the help of two “experts”: Bill Nye the Science Guy and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Let’s look at their qualifications.

Secretary of State John Kerry is an expert on oceans and the ecology of ocean life. While in the Senate, he served on the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Kerry has real-life oceanic experience on his yacht—like when he rode around while Egypt fell apart last year. Kerry is also a maritime expert on geography, at least as far as knowing where to park his yacht in order to avoid paying $500,000 a year in taxes.

Bill Nye the Science Guy is also an esteemed scientist when it comes to oceanography and the threats of rising tides and climate change. As a graduate from Cornell in mechanical engineering, which involves a great deal of both maritime science and ocean biology, Nye is totally, absolutely, licensed to discuss these issues. With tweets like this or this (because there have been so many proven links between climate change and Hurricane Sandy), how can Nye not be in a position to speak?

Lastly, actor and movie star Leonardo DiCaprio is probably the most knowledgeable person on earth with regards to the threats faced by our oceans. His extensive work on the movie Titanic is all the credential he needs. DiCaprio is an expert in the ecology of the Newfoundland area having spent time treading water there. He is also an expert on ice caps and icebergs, which, though they may have disrupted his travels, seem to be both melting and increasing at the same time. DiCaprio has many concerns about rising waters, especially considering his inability to swim in them. They say to not throw trash into the ocean, and that’s exactly where DiCaprio left his acting career.

In all seriousness, this is disgraceful. As Kerry and the Ivy League boys at State continue to push climate change and ocean alarmism, real people are being hurt. With ISIS killing hundreds in Iraqi, the tone deafness at the State Department is stunning.
