In response to Aaron Goldstein’s post, I approach this topic from the perspective of a reporter. If I’m interviewing a candidate who supports same-sex marriage legalization, I wouldn’t ask, “Why are you undercutting marriage by advocating pro-homosexual policies?” It isn’t a fair question, and it’s loaded with bias.

And if I asked that question at a Democratic presidential debate, I would have every expectation of getting booed.

Of course, Stephen Hill (the soldier serving in Iraq) isn’t obligated to ask a fairly worded question. But my original point was that the audience’s visceral reaction was more to the phraseology of the question than to the fact that an openly homosexual soldier asked it. Yet the narrative became that a Republican audience booed the soldier himself.

As to the specifics of the DADT policy, many African-Americans I speak with bristle at the Left’s frequent comparison of homosexual rights to the struggle for racial equality. One involves behavior, the other intrinsic characteristics obvious to the naked eye. To equate a man having sex with a man to being black is a stretch.
