No Crying in Baseball — But Lots of PC

Houston Astro’s Yuli Gurriel has the worst hair in the Major Leagues. Perhaps the worst hair in the world. This is what he should be ridiculed for, not his juvenile antics in making what’s being called racist gestures after hitting a home run off Yu Darvish (who is Iranian/Japanese) in the second inning of Friday’s World Series game.

Gurriel, from Cuba, is supposed to have made a “slant-eyed gesture” in the dugout after touching them all. (I didn’t see it, and don’t care to.) This touched of a storm from the Indignation-Industrial Complex, and one of its subsidiaries, Major League Baseball. Gurriel has apologized, saying he didn’t mean to offend Japanese people in any way. This and Houston manager A.J. Hinch telling him, “ That was wrong; don’t do it again, dummy,” should have been sufficient to cover a tasteless lapse by this gaijin.

And it would have been in less tetchy times. But now that a tyrannical cultural left has bullied our institutions, including all professional sports organizations, into relentlessly and harshly enforcing every item of the vast PC code of etiquette, Major League Baseball is getting into the act, and elevating this boys-will-be-boys rudeness from the misdemeanor it is into a capital offense. Gurriel has been ordered by MLB to appear in the principal’s offense today to be berated (and perhaps fined) for his failure to be up to date with the Social Code According to the Left.

I’m not sure if Rob Manfred — who looks good in a suit — is even aware that baseball dugouts are far more civilized places than they used to be. And that some antics by high-spirited, highly competitive, testosterone-besotted young men at their high-tension work should just be ignored. I’m sure Darvish did. Without talking to him, I’m sure Darvish was a lot more bothered by Houston hitters, including Gurriel, lighting him up than he was by any puerile gestures Gurriel might have made after going yard at Yu’s expense.

Rob Manfred is acting more like a high school hall monitor than like the commissioner of a great sport. I’m sure A.J. Hinch could get Yuli to act a bit more respectful of others without the league sticking its unnecessary oar in.
