More Than Just Another Flag Day…
by

Although Flag Day gets top billing on June 14, let’s not forget that today is also the 237th birthday of the United States Army.

Normally the 165th day of the year – it’s the 166th in this leap year – today also marks the 200 day countdown to 2013. If Mayan Prophecy is realized sometime before the end of this 2012, we’re going to be counting on our guys and gals in uniform to keep things steady when the world goes to pot. In other words, I’m just doing my karmic duty by getting the word out.

However, I’d be doing a disservice to our oldest uniformed branch if I didn’t specify the following: June 14 marks the establishment of the Continental Army, formed June 14, 1775. Obviously, that occurred before the formal creation of the United States… the latter development owed, in no small part, to the efforts of the predecessor to the United States Army which was officially conceived by act of the Congress of the Confederation, June 3rd, 1784.

Also, (and I wasn’t around to confirm this personally) today marks 58 years since President Dwight D. Eisenhower put his mark on a bill that placed “under God” into the United States Pledge of Allegiance.

With these words, Ike sent a shot across the bow of those godless reds in Moscow:

From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural school house, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty. To anyone who truly loves America, nothing could be more inspiring than to contemplate this rededication of our youth, on each school morning, to our country’s true meaning.

Thanks again…for all of this.
