Good and bad news from the country music front. I was delighted to learn that Loretta Lynn at 84 is still singing for her many fans, in which group you may include me.

The bad news is that the coal miner’s daughter had to cancel a Labor Day concert at her home in Hurricane Falls, Tennessee because she took a fall and injured herself. Nothing life threatening. No broken bones. Just some bruised ribs.

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up,” she joked in a letter to her fans apologizing for her absence. “I injured my chest and can’t get a deep enough breath to sing.”

Lynn normally hosts the show annually with her sister, Crystal Gayle (“Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”). This year Lynn’s twin daughters, Peggy and Patsy, sang several of their mother’s hits.

We pray for the coal miner’s daughter’s rapid and complete recovery. She has concerts scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10, at which she expects to be able to perform. Apparently her stay on the DL will be brief.

In a non-musical aside to this story, Lynn recently said in an interview with Reuters that she’s passing up the option of the first woman president and will be voting for Donald Trump in November.  Seems any fool can fool a Harvard graduate. But it takes more than a closet full of pants suits and a line of patter to fool a coal miner’s daughter.

Speaking of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” for those who haven’t seen it yet, the 1980 movie of that name is well worth the viewing time. It’s the best thing Sissy Spacek has done, and was my first look at the irrepressible and always entertaining Tommy Lee Jones.
