Letter to the Editor: How About a Federally Supported 24-Hour Election Day?
by

The title pretty much says it all.

You may ask yourself: “Why didn’t I think of that?”

But you see, you knew it all along.

How many times did you miss voting — before the more liberal rules of mail-in votes — when it was a 12- to 14-hour window?

I know I did.

Work, parenting time, health, weather.

The first point is if we opened up a 24-hour period, more people would vote.

This is a no brainer.

The second point is the Constitution is clear that the states make their own rules, so for this to work, the states would certainly need additional federal funding.

If you don’t know already, most jurisdictions have trouble getting poll workers, but this can be done.

And it should.

Why?

Simple enough: making the voting locations more available for everyone would do more to support faith in the system than tweaks and minor fixes.

I predict we would have a measurable increase in the percentage of voters.

Now your lazy Uncle (or Aunt) Billy (or Susie) has no excuse.

Sleep too late?

The polls are open until midnight.

Work nights?

No problem. You can vote starting at midnight.

If you are a public figure or a congressperson and read this, get on it, will ya?
