Happy Retirement Dr. Sowell!
by

The unparalleled Thomas Sowell has announced his retirement from writing a syndicated column.

As he notes, “Even the best things come to an end.” And his column was the very best. On the rare occasion that one of his columns was lackluster, it really stood out because usually he wrote with virtually unassailable logic, marshaling facts and evidence to support his case.

Luckily, just about every column he has written since 2000 is on the internet, and many of the ones written prior are in books either still in print or used copies easily purchased via Amazon. Thus, it will be easy to go back and discover Sowell’s thinking in order to figure out what he would have thought about future issues and controversies.

While we will be deprived of Sowell’s insights on a weekly basis, I doubt that he’ll stop writing columns completely. On occasion, some issue will get under his skin and he’ll feel compelled to write about it. I look forward to those deviations from his retirement.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Sowell’s column “The Century of the Intellectual,” available in his book Barbarians Inside The Gate. Give it a few seconds to sink in, and you’ll see another reason why so many on the political left have come unhinged by the impending presidency of Donald Trump:

What all these movements [Nazism, Communism, etc.] have in common is a sense of a revelation grasped only by the anointed, but a revelation that needs to be imposed on the benighted masses for their own good. Could anything be more of an ego trip, or more in keeping with intellectuals’ exalted view of themselves, or their resentment at seeing wealth and power in the hands of lesser beings?
