People from across the country have gathered at Asbury University to join students who have been praying, singing, and worshiping the Lord for hundreds of hours straight. The small Christian college is located in Wilmore, Kentucky, which is just outside of Lexington. Videos of the worship have gone viral on TikTok, drawing attention from the media and encouraging Christians to join in prayer.

At first, it started as a regular chapel service. But then, it didn’t end. And it hasn’t stopped for over a week.

“This has been an extraordinary time for us,” Asbury President Kevin Brown said Monday after 120 hours of worship.

In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Alison Perfater, Asbury’s student body president, indicated that there were individuals from Brazil as well as Indonesia who had gathered with them.

“We’ve been here in Hughes Auditorium for over a hundred hours — praying, crying, worshiping and uniting — because of Love,” wrote Alexandra Presta, executive editor of the Asbury Collegian, the school’s student newspaper.

So many worshippers have joined that they had to expand into an overflow chapel across the street at the Asbury Theological Seminary.

Especially significant about this “spiritual revival” is that it’s filled with young people, who are statistically less religious than previous generations, according to the American Survey Center. Thirty-four percent of Gen Z identifies as unaffiliated, a figure that is five percentage points higher than it is for millennials.

Though correlation isn’t necessarily causation, there may be some connection to the lack of religious affiliation and the startling mental health struggles faced by Gen Z. One study found that members of Gen Z are three times more likely to say that they would be better off dead and twice as likely to battle depression and hopelessness.

Perhaps it’s a coincidence. But perhaps not. 

Not only does our culture increasingly reject religion, but it also celebrates and elevates borderline satanic events (like Sam Smith’s “Unholy” performance at the Grammys). A spiritual revival is just what Gen Z, the nation, and the world desperately need. 

“The Holy Spirit has interceded for us here at Asbury,” Perfater told Carlson, “And across the nation.”
