Even those who follow the Grand Old Game casually know that the great Vin Scully will be hanging up his microphone after 67 years of calling first Brooklyn, then Los Angeles Dodgers games, leaving the summer of 2017 without its voice. And what a voice it has been for all those years.

I suppose one could find, after an exhaustive and exhausting search, someone who doesn’t think Vin is the best baseball announcer in the history of the world. There have, after all, always been eccentrics among us. But these folks need not detain us as the end of Scully’s career is the occasion now of celebration. Well-deserved celebration, but celebration tinged with sadness when we consider that Scully will no longer be part of our summer soundtrack.

Time to hear the red-headed storyteller in action grows short. His career will end Oct. 2 with the final game of the 2016 regular Major League Baseball season. The Dodgers’ final six games are on the road, first against San Diego then San Francisco. Vin’s final call of a game at Dodger Stadium is Sunday against the Colorado Rockies. The MLB Network will broadcast this historic game and Vin’s call of it. Too much of an opportunity to miss.
