Trump’s Plan to Bar Muslims From Entering U.S. Would Not Have Prevented San Bernardino Attacks
by

The most curious aspect of Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the United States is that it would not apply to Muslims who are already American citizens.

As Trump told George Stephanopoulos, “If a person is a Muslim, goes overseas and comes back, they can come back. They’re a citizen. That’s different.”

Well, Syed Farook was an American citizen, traveled to Saudi Arabia and, unfortunately for 14 of his co-workers he came back with a new wife in tow.

Last I checked, Boston Marathon bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev was an American citizen while older brother Tamerlan’s U.S. citizenship application was pending.

It’s one thing for this country to exercise caution and limit the number of Syrian refugees we admit. It is quite another to bar non-U.S. citizen Muslims from entering altogether. Even if it could be done it discounts American Muslims who have already been radicalized. Trump’s plan would not have prevented the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, much less the Boston Marathon Bombings.

While there is a critical mass of Muslims both here and abroad that wish to do this country grievous harm it is not a problem that can be solved with easy answers. Unfortunately, where it concerns easy answers Donald Trump has cornered the market.
