Senators Slippery on Iran Deal
by

The authors of our U.S. Constitution envisioned Senators as serious-minded leaders. Now many act like weasels. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) , Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), and Cory Booker (D-NJ), and others — some 18 senators in all — give slippery, noncommittal answers about the proposed deal with Iran and claim they are studying the issue. Sorry. They’re dodging the issue.

Watching these senators avoid taking a stand is nauseating. If this deal is approved, our children will face the threat of a nuclear war with Iran. These senators are not worried about that. They’re looking out for their own political futures and squirming under pressure from the White House to support the deal, while opponents warn that the deal is a serious threat to America and a death sentence for Israel.

These senators are gaming the system. If the President appears to have enough votes without them, the White House will quietly release them to vote against the deal. Otherwise, they’ll have to vote with Obama, the safety of our children and Israel be damned.

Blumenthal claims he is carefully reading the deal. Nonsense, it’s only 159 pages long, and he’s had it for six weeks Page one shows it’s a sham. The opening page states, “Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop, or acquire any nuclear weapons.” That’s pure fiction.

Blumenthal claims he has to carefully study the deal, but every day he tries to change the topic. Literally he holds a press conference or introduces a bill every day on some minor issue to deflect attention from his inaction: airline baggage fees, banning shipments of big game trophies after the slaughter of Cecil the Lion, making September 25th national Lobster Day, and holding hearings on international soccer. Blumenthal is Senator Small Ball.

Senator Booker is another weasel. He’s avoiding taking a stand because he’s a surrogate speaker for Hillary Clinton, and she’s on record supporting the Iran deal.

Booker, Blumenthal, and the others are hoping to run out the clock. If the President has the requisite votes by September 17, the deadline for congressional action, they’re off the hook. That’s what they’re waiting for.

We the people should call these weasels and make them feel our outrage. The stakes are high here.

The deal will put $150 billion of previously frozen cash assets into the hands of America-hating, Israel-destroying theocratic fanatics. They will use the money to buy weapons for Hamas, Hezbollah, and other terrorists.

The deal will pave the way for Iran ultimately to make a bomb. Obama once promised that he would lift economic sanctions only if Iran eliminated its nuclear program. Now Obama has caved, allowing Iran to maintain its nuclear research for ten years or more.

Obama once promised “anytime, anywhere” inspections. But the deal will give Iran 24 days notice. Shockingly, side agreements just coming to light may even allow Iranians to inspect themselves. What a farce. The United States is barred from seeing these side agreements. No senator committed to the safety of our nation should tolerate this.

In Federalist 63, James Madison, the chief architect of the Constitution, explained that Senators shouldered the responsibility to conduct foreign relations and approve or reject treaties. They would be the great deliberators entrusted with our nation’s safety. Too bad they’ve turned into political weasels.
