A Sigh of Relief for Manny Machado
by

Last night, Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado sustained a season ending torn medial patella tendon ligament in his left knee while running out a single against the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s painful to watch. Machado had to be carted off on a stretcher

As Machado’s season so did that of the Orioles who fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. The O’s were swept by the Rays effectively ending any chances for a AL Wild Card spot.

While Chris Davis has been the Orioles top star this season with 52 home runs and 136 RBI, Machado is the team’s franchise player. In his first full season in the bigs, the 20-year old Miami native hit .283 with 14 HR and 71 RBI. Machado led the AL in doubles with 51.

But his greatest contributions are with the glove. I mean when Brooks Robinson praises your play at third base then you are doing something very, very right.

If there is a silver lining in all of this is that Machado tore neither his MCL or ACL and might be able to resume baseball activities in six to eight weeks.

It appears that Manny Machado and the Orioles can breathe a sigh of relief. Yet a serious injury can derail a promising career in the time it takes to run to first base.
