Democrats Gunning for Scott Brown

Over on the main site, I have a column looking at the scare Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown has put into Democrats nationally in the race to fill Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. In the last 24 hours, several steps have been taken to shore up Democratic candidate Marth Coakley. They’ve gone up on the air with their first negative ads against Brown, accusing him of voting in “lockstep with Washington Republicans. And the Washington Post reports, “On the staff level, both Democratic National Committee spokesman Hari Sevugan, a veteran of a number of campaigns including a 2004 Senate race in Kentucky, and Michael Meehan, a longtime Democratic operative with ties to Sen. John Kerry (Mass.), were dispatched to stabilize Coakley’s campaign.”

On the one hand, this shows that the Democrats really do fear that they might lose the Jan. 19 special election and are pulling out all the stops to keep Coakley from going down. On the other, it makes it harder for Brown to win if the Democrats are engaged and don’t take this Senate contest for granted. The element of surprise has been lost, so Brown’s supporters will have to compete with the Democratic ground game in Massachusetts.
