Kentucky Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo said yesterday that he wasn’t sure he would endorse Attorney General Jack Conway, who narrowly beat him in the Democratic primary, for U.S. Senate against Republican Rand Paul. The more moderate Mongiardo said his beef is not just with Conway but with the “elite” of the state Democratic Party: “I feel that in this state there are two Democratic parties. There’s the party of the elite, and then there’s the party of the rest of us, the grass-roots Democrats.”
The Republican primary was much more openly contentious, with most of the GOP establishment backing Secretary of State Trey Grayson’s spirited campaign against Paul. But since the primary ended, Republicans have closed ranks behind Paul, who has raised $1 million in the past three months. Grayson has already endorsed Paul, as has Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
