Tobruk was a vital British base in North Africa behind Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps lines. It was a major thorn in his side and kept him from taking Cairo and Suez for a long time. When it unexpectedly fell to Rommel in 1942, losing immense supplies and thousands of prisoners, Winston Churchill said, “Defeat is one thing. Disgrace is another.” This comes to mind today with the fall of Kabul after the USA has poured thousands of men and almost $100 billion in arms to the Afghan government, now completely gone. What would Churchill say today? What can anyone say today? And Biden is on vacation. God help us. God help the thousands who will die screaming.
