Carl Gardner, lead singer of The Coasters, passed away on June 12th due to complications from congestive heart failure and vascular dementia. He was 83.
The Coasters had a string of hits in the late 1950’s which remain an indelible part of the rock n’ roll pantheon. These hits included “Searchin'” (with an introduction by Steve Allen), “Yakety Yak”, “Charlie Brown” & “Poison Ivy.”
At the risk of sounding crumudgeonly, they don’t make music like this anymore.
