Canada’s Green Party President Forced to Resign for Being Pro-Israel

I have made no secret of the fact that I broke with the NDP and the Left in general over its reaction to the events of September 11, 2001. The anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiments were simply too much to bear.

There is little room on the Left for supporting Israel. Yesterday, Paul Estrin was forced to resign as President of Canada’s Green Party for writing a blog post on the party’s website last week in support of Israel. In a blog post titled “Why Gaza Makes Me Sad” (which has since been removed from its website), Estrin writes, “Gazan officials tell their people to be killed while they hide in bomb shelters. This is worse than cowardice. It is vile and ugly and they should be put to shame. Instead, it is Israel who is put to shame.”

Apparently the truth offends Green Party members because they angrily denounced Estrin. His fate was sealed when Green Party leader Elizabeth May issued several tweets disavowing Estrin’s editorial.

The Green Party insists Estrin isn’t being sanctioned for his views. Green Party Communications Director Julian Morelli stated, “He resigned because of the confusion caused. It had nothing to do with his views. The issue was around the controversy and the confusion it caused by his signing off (on his blog) as party president.”

Estrin’s resignation had everything to do with his views on Israel. Would Estrin have been forced to resign if he had written a blog post in favor of Hamas? Speaking of Hamas, Estrin writes, “Yes, their flag is green, but that is where the resemblance stops. Or at least, that is where it should stop.”

With Estrin’s resignation, the resemblance between Hamas and the Green Party of Canada doesn’t stop there. The only question that remains is where does it stop?
