Anna Schwartz, R.I.P.

Economist Anna Schwartz passed away on June 21st after a long illness. She was 96.

Schwartz was best known for her collaborations with Milton Friedman. In 1963, Schwartz and Friedman co-authored A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960. Schwartz and Friedman made the case the Great Depression was caused by the tight money policy of the Federal Reserve rather than the Stock Market Crash of 1929.

A case could be made that Schwartz should have shared in the Nobel Prize in Economics that was bestowed upon Friedman in 1976.

In July 2009, Schwartz wrote an op-ed for The New York Times in which she called upon President Obama not to re-appoint Ben Bernanke to another term as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Here is a list of Schwartz’s publications with the National Bureau of Economic Research.
