Alexander Haig, RIP

Alexander Haig, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander and Secretary of State, died earlier today. He was 85. Back in June 1983, at his Essex House suite, he met with a group of European journalists we were showing around New York and Washington. He and his aide Woody Goldberg couldn’t have been more cordial. He had a most sobering view of foreign policy reality. Every day, he said, he had set out to work determined that a given situation wouldn’t worsen. He had no illusions.
