CNN Reports Santorum Will Drop Out Tonight & Endorse Another Candidate UPDATE: Santorum Endorses Rubio
by

CNN is reporting that Rick Santorum will end his 2016 presidential bid this evening and endorse another Republican presidential candidate.

Santorum’s departure is only surprising in that it did not happen sooner. He could not replicate the magic of his 2012 Iowa Caucus win which briefly put a wrench in Mitt Romney’s ascension to the GOP nomination. Santorum could not get out of the GOP undercard debate and his frustration grew with each debate. In his most recent debate performance, Santorum used his closing remarks to thank his supporters by name. The writing was on the wall in permanent ink. On Tuesday night, Santorum garnered only 1,783 votes registering at 1% of the total ballots cast. Unless you include Jim Gilmore, Santorum finished dead last in the race. No matter how you look at it this was quite the come down.

However, it will be interesting to see who Santorum endorses. I doubt he would support Cruz. The Rubio campaign says they have not spoken with Santorum. Given that Santorum appeared with Trump at his veteran’s rally after last week’s undercard debate, the odds have to be in Trump’s favor.

But I also wouldn’t be surprised if Santorum endorsed Ben Carson. I think Carson is the candidate in the race who is the closest to his own socially conservative views. Carson did finish fourth in Iowa with 9% of the vote. While at the top of the polls in the fall, things haven’t been the same for Carson since the Paris attacks. While I don’t think Santorum endorisng Carson would do much in the grand scheme it could give his campaign a short term boost, particularly in South Carolina.

UPDATE: Santorum has endorsed Rubio on the basis that he is part of a new generation who can unite the country. I’m sure Trump will soon be calling Santorum a loser.
