Donald Trump has abruptly cancelled a trip to Israel later this month in which he was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The cancellation came about after Netanyahu saw fit to criticize Trump’s proposed Muslim immigration and travel ban. In a statement issued by his office, Netanyahu said, “The State of Israel respects all religions and strictly guarantees the rights of all its citizens. At the same time, Israel is fighting against militant Islam that targets Muslims, Christians and Jews alike and threatens the entire world.”
For his part, Trump has said he will return to Israel to meet with Netanyahu “after I become President of the U.S.” Aside from having skin as thin as Obama’s, I would imagine that Trump didn’t expect Bibi to criticize him for his position on Muslims. I also suspect that Trump doesn’t want to face Bibi’s wrath given his recent statements in which criticized Israel for being unwilling to make peace with the Palestinians notwithstanding the fact that it was Mahmoud Abbas, not Netanyahu, who declared the Oslo Accords dead on the floor of the UN General Assembly this past September. What Trump doesn’t know about The Middle East could fill a 32-volume set of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Now I know that Bibi and Trump have had good relations in the past and am also aware that Trump even recorded a commercial for Bibi during Israel’s elections in 2013. But Bibi also doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Netanyahu has had to put up with President Obama’s foolishness for nearly 7 years. The last thing Bibi need is 8 years with yet another fool in the Oval Office be it Hillary or Trump.
