There has been much comment on soccer fans in Turkey booing a moment of silence for the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks prior to a match between Turkey and Greece in Istanbul.
But it was so much more than booing. Some of the fans were chanting “Allahu Akbar!!!”
I’m sure there are still some devotees of Ataturk’s secularism left in Turkey, but they are diminishing with each passing day. While there may be Muslim leaders who are prepared to condemn the Paris attacks, we do ourselves a disservice if we ignore this public outburst. It is evidence that there is not only a critical mass within the Muslim world that are prepared to carry out these attacks, but that there is a critical mass within the Muslim world that approves of ISIS and thinks nothing is more wonderful than dead Parisians (and for that matter, dead Britons, Danes, Australians, Canadians, Israelis and Americans).
Although this took place in Turkey, who can say that some of the people shouting “Allahu Akbar!!!” weren’t Syrian refugees?
