When Boehner Invited Bibi

No doubt there are many conservatives rejoicing at House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden resignation which takes effect at the end of next month.

It can be justifiably argued that Boehner was ineffective in shepherding a conservative legislative agenda and acting as an official opposition to the Obama Administration. His habit of tearing up at the slightest provocation didn’t help matters much. However, I strongly suspect that Boehner, who is Roman Catholic, probably made his decision to depart as he was listening to Pope Francis address Congress yesterday. It could very well be the case that he has found another calling.

While there is much to criticize where it concerns Boehner’s tenure as House Speaker, I do think it took guts for him to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before Congress earlier this year to make his case against the Iran nuclear deal. Of course, Boehner did so without the knowledge of the Obama Administration, which did not want America to hear Netanyahu’s objections. Despite considerable pressure put on Boehner to cancel the speech, he did not budge in this matter. While critics accused Boehner of turning Israel into a partisan matter, in reality it was Democrats who did so by boycotting the speech of an ally and friend. (Could you imagine the hue and cry that would have arisen from the mainstream media had Republicans boycotted the Pope’s speech en masse on account of some of his liberal positions?)

Sadly, the Iran nuclear deal is a fait d’accompli. But a large majority in this country oppose it and that is in no small part due to Netanyahu’s address to Congress which would not have been possible without John Boehner.
