Girardi Remains Yankees Manager
by

When the Chicago Cubs fired Dale Sveum on the last day of the regular season, I speculated that Joe Girardi might leave the Bronx for Wrigley Field.

Well, um, no.

Today, Girardi signed an extension with the New York Yankees which ensures he remains in the dugout through the 2017 season. The contract is estimated to be worth $16 million.

The Yankees will definitely be a team in transition, but with Girardi remaining at the helm the transition could be a lot smoother than expected. At the very least, I think Girardi should be named AL Manager of the Year for keeping the Yankees in the hunt all season despite missing Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez for most of the year.

As for the Cubs, who will they turn to now that Girardi is staying in New York. Matt Snyder suggests the likes of former Nationals and Indians manager Manny Acta, former big league catcher Brad Ausmus, Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar, Jr., former D’Backs manager A.J. Hinch, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and Padres bench coach Rick Renteria.

Assuming this is the list the Cubs are considering, I would put my money on Renteria. Cubs GM Jed Hoyer was previously the GM in San Diego and Cubs President Theo Epstein cut his teeth in the Padres organization.

Here are some other people I think the Cubs should consider: Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, Blue Jays bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Red Sox third base coach Brian Butterfield and Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo. Three of those coaches are still involved in the post-season. Are the Cubs willing to wait until after the post-season to make a decision or are they looking to hire immediately?
