Nyad’s Aquatic Achievement

I would be remiss if I didn’t make note of Diana Nyad’s swim in the Atlantic Ocean from Cuba to Florida.

Such an accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but the fact that she did this at the age of 64 is astounding. As Satchel Paige said, “Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” It is a testament to her will, fortitude and stubborness. I emphasize the word stubborn because Nyad has been trying to do this since 1978. This was her fifth attempt. Well, if at first you don’t succeed….

I consider myself a pretty avid swimmer. I’m in the pool four times a week and over the past year have gone from swimming 12 to 15 laps a night to 25 to 30 laps a night. I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for years. But I can’t fathom swimming a 100-plus miles in the Atlantic. My aquatic ambitions are far more modest. I’d be happy to swim across Walden Pond.

So what do you do for an encore? Next month, Nyad plans to swim in a pool for 48 hours straight to raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy. But Ayad describes the route from Havana to Key West “the Mount Everest of oceans.” What do you do when there is no Everest to climb? Or to swim?
