Jerry Remy’s Son Charged With Murder
by

This is just awful.

Jared Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Jennifer Martel yesterday. The murder took place on Thursday night at the couple’s home in Waltham. Martel was stabbed repeatedly during a prolonged struggle. Their four-year old daughter was in the home at the time of the homicide. Remy is being held without bail.

The younger Remy had been arrested the day before the murder for assaulting Martel, but was released on his own recognizance. This took place because Martel did not show up to court to extend the restraining order she had filed against him. However, according to Martel’s grandfather, she was planning to end her relationship with Remy. He has a long history of domestic assaults against Martel and other women going back to 1998.

It is said that you cannot judge a book by its cover, but he absolutely looks like an evil monster. While no one is grieving more intensely than Martel’s family one can only imagine the shame Jerry and Phoebe Remy feel for having brought this monster into the world. It is a shame that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. No doubt this isn’t the first time the Remys have been disappointed by their son’s behavior. The younger Remy was in the employ of the Red Sox as part of their security staff, but was fired in 2009 following a probe by MLB into his involvement in alleged PED use in the Red Sox clubhouse during the 2008 season.

Jerry Remy was neither on hand for his son’s arraignment nor was he in the broadcast booth for Friday night’s game at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees. Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley filled in for Remy. No word yet as to when he will return to his duties.

Remy, who is affectionately known as Rem Dawg, has been the Red Sox color commentator since 1988. A Massachusetts native, Remy began his big league debut with the California Angels in 1975, but played the bulk of his career with the Red Sox in the late 70s and early 80s. Remy was diagnosed with lung cancer late in 2008 and has intermittently missed time because of his illness every since. His cancer recurred this spring and would later miss several weeks due to a bout of pneumonia. This horrific act cannot be good for his health.

This is the second high profile homicide case in the New England sports world. In June, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged in the shooting death of his friend Odin Lloyd.

UPDATE: On Saturday, Jerry Remy took to Twitter to comment on his son’s arrest. He stated, “My thoughts and prayers go out to Jenn Martel and her family. Words cannot describe my wife’s and my grief. Son or not, I am at a loss for words articulating my disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act. We are heartbroken.”
