Is UK Immigration Crackdown Too Little, Too Late?
by

British Prime Minister David Cameron announced a crackdown on illegal immigration as well as plans to impose restrictions on when immigrants can receive welfare benefits, council housing and care from the NHS.

This announcement is, of course, motivated by the increasing popularity of Nigel Farrange’s U.K. Independence Party as evidenced in the Eastleigh by-election last month. Although the Liberal Democrats (the junior partner in Cameron’s coalition) retained the seat, the UKIP finished ahead of both the Tories and Labour.

I suspect that Cameron’s efforts will help the UKIP given that his measures will only affect a small portion of migrants from within the EU to the UK.

Frankly, immigration reform is decades overdue in Britain. As it happens, I am reading Melanie Phillips’ Londonistan which documents how Britain’s liberal asylum laws and generous social programs sewed the seeds of jihad by giving Muslim fundamentalists a beachhead in the cradle of liberty. Sadly, even the Tory government of Margaret Thatcher allowed immigration from Muslim countries to go unchecked. Nobody wanted to touch immigration since the late Tory MP Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of Blood” speech in 1968. Perhaps if his warnings had only been partially heeded then perhaps Britain would not be in its current state of affairs.

Many of the people affected by Cameron’s legislation will be Bulgarians and Romanians who will be allowed to emigrate to the UK in January 2014. Unlike a critical mass of their Muslim predecessors, these Eastern Europeans simply wish to better their lives and have no intentions toward jihad or any other violence towards Britain. To that extent, it is lamentable that they will be made to suffer the poor judgment of both Tory and Labour governments over the past four and a half decades.
