Reuters Links Death of CO Corrections Chief to Signing of New Gun Control Law

Last night, Tom Clements, Director of Colorado’s Department of Corrections, was shot and killed as he answered his front door last night near Denver. As of this writing, there are no suspects nor motive known behind the killing. Yet here is Reuters lead in to the story:

The head of Colorado state’s prison system was shot and killed at his home, just hours before the governor signed into law on Wednesday a package of gun control measures spurred by a rash of deadly mass shootings in Colorado and elsewhere.

Could someone please tell me what exactly does the heinous shooting death of a top state government official have to do with Governor Hickenlooper signing new gun control measures?

If you read the story further, it notes that Clements was employed in the corrections system in Missouri for more than three decades. Authorities are looking into that connection. If one has worked with a prison population for more than thirty years then one is inevitably bound to have enemies who are willing to use lethal force.

A colleague of mine suggested that Reuters might be using this angle to suggest that had the law been signed that Clements might have been saved. Well, if someone was prepared to walk up to the front door of Clements home, ring the bell, wait for the door open and then pull the trigger I doubt that any new gun law would have acted as a deterrent.

Reuters attempt to spin Clements’ horrific death into a paean for gun control is beyond contempt.
