Of course, George McGovern was running against an incumbent and Michael Dukakis a quasi-incumbent. They had a higher bar to reach because they were the challengers. Maybe John McCain is in the quasi-incumbent role this time out and Barack Obama will be seen as the challenger, to be rejected by swing voters as too liberal, inexperienced, and risky. Maybe not.
