With GOP Nomination in Hand, Why Does Trump Insult Susana Martinez?
by

I suppose the answer as to why Donald Trump insults anyone, much less New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, is an existential one. Trump insults therefore he is.

Of course, it could be that he genuinely dislikes Hispanics, particularly Hispanic women who are in positions of authority or minority women in general (please see Nikki Haley) and simply cannot abide Martinez for who she is. Or it could be because he believes his followers do and is giving them what he thinks they want. Whatever his reason, I’m only surprised that Trump didn’t belittle Martinez’s physical appearance. But hey, this is Trump we’re talking about. He could easily remedy that before the week is out.

But with the Republican nomination in hand why does he go out of his way to publicly insult someone like Martinez? The chair of the Republican Governors Association no less. Someone in charge of fundraising dollars. Trump needs cash. Why bite the hand that can feed you? Now evidently, Martinez criticized him behind closed doors with regard to his immigration proposals. Of course, no one likes to be criticized. But Trump isn’t above criticism and it doesn’t entitle him to lie about Martinez accepting Syrian refugees (she hasn’t). Let’s remember that Trump was fine and dandy with accepting Syrian refugees 8 months ago.

If Trump expects Republicans, especially those with reservations about him, to unite around him it’s hard to see how this will come to pass if he insists on besmirching them. Then again, this is a man who compared Ben Carson to a child molester and Carson eagerly endorsed The Donald. Trump figures he’s come this far with the Don Rickles routine (only far less funny) why stop now?

It also stands to reason that Trump believes Republicans have no choice but to bend to his will regardless of what he says about them. But some people don’t suffer fools gladly. Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska comes to mind and now it looks like you can add Susana Martinez to the list. With Martinez, Trump is making an enemy in the wrong place and at the wrong time.
