Martha’s Vineyard Freakout Exposes Sanctuary Cities as Frauds
by

Why is the Left in such a fit of pique over the transporting of illegal aliens from Arizona, Florida, and Texas to sanctuary cities? While sending illegals to places like New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Martha’s Vineyard must be an irritant to the officials there, the response seems all out of proportion to what Republican governors are actually doing.

For example, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said, “Exploiting vulnerable people for political stunts is repulsive and cruel.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams called it “inhumane.” Not to be outdone, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) fumed, “It’s appalling that far-right politicians seem to have decided that fall before an election is their regularly scheduled time to commit crimes against humanity on refugees.”

While politicians are no strangers to hyperbole, those reactions are way over the top. It would be cruel and inhumane if Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey were busing illegals to Seven Mile Road in Detroit or the Tenderloin in San Francisco, but they aren’t doing that. And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flying 50 illegals to Martha’s Vineyard is a crime against humanity? If you’re not laughing, you should be. (READ MORE: The Martha’s Vineyard Holocaust)

The actions of Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey have exposed sanctuary cities as shams.

AOC unintentionally hit on one reason for the Left’s hysteria. The actions of Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey threaten to make President Joe Biden’s disastrous immigration policies front and center a few weeks before an election that is already shaping up to be a disaster for the Democrats.

But that is only part of it. What we are also seeing is the reaction of people who have long received something for free and now are being required to pay for it.

For the longest time, becoming a sanctuary city has come with no cost. City councils could woo progressive voters by declaring their locales sanctuary cities while those voters could feel good about themselves, if not morally superior. And they could do all that secure in the knowledge that truckloads of illegal immigrants wouldn’t be dropped on the doorstep of city hall. Best of all, those areas of the country that did have to pay the costs of illegal immigration usually weren’t so progressive.

But the actions of Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey have exposed sanctuary cities as shams. Clearly, the politicians and residents of sanctuary cities never expected to pay for their posturing. So Adams and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declare states of emergency expecting the federal government to provide help. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot sends some of the illegals arriving in the Windy City to an adjoining suburb. And Martha’s Vineyard calls on the governor of Massachusetts to send in the National Guard.

It’s a little hard to blame the Left for thinking that they’d never have to pay for their virtue signaling given that they had gotten away with it for so long. Back in the 1970s and ’80s, numerous city councils declared their cities to be “nuclear free zones.” It was easy, since the federal government would almost never station any warheads in those areas. (For a fun thought experiment, imagine that the Soviet Union had conquered the U.S. in the 1980s and then stationed nuclear missiles in places like Berkeley and Iowa City. How dogged would the progressives in those areas have been in defending their principles?)

But now the jig is up. Abbott, DeSantis, and Ducey won’t be the last politicians on the right to require leftists to live up to their professed ideals. Martha’s Vineyard won’t be the last time the Left fails to do so.

No one likes being forced to pay the cost of something that they long assumed they would get gratis. And they get exceptionally angry when they are exposed as frauds in the process.
