Alexander Haig, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander and Secretary of State, died earlier today. He was 85. Back in June 1983, at his Essex House suite, he met with a group of European journalists we were showing around New York and Washington. He and his aide Woody Goldberg couldn’t have been more cordial. He had a most sobering view of foreign policy reality. Every day, he said, he had set out to work determined that a given situation wouldn’t worsen. He had no illusions.
