Here’s a minor example of conservative principle that presents itself to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
There are people out there…specifically in New Jersey for the point at hand…. who believe they can cure gays from being gay…. with therapy. See here.
I know, I know. Yes, I think this is, well, to borrow from the Brits, daft.
But this is still America. And if there are people out there who, no coercion involved, want to hang up a shingle that says “Gay Curing Therapy Here”…so….what?
There are people all over America who believe they can convert someone to a fill-in-the-blank cause. Indeed, Christian missionaries still roam the world believing they can convince the non-Christian faithful to The Lord. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes not. As long as they are not doing it by force …who cares? It is decidedly not the business of either the State of New Jersey….or The State… period. (And yes, apparently if not predictably, California is out there with such a law now on the books.)
Is Governor Christie seriously thinking of signing such a bizarre bill? One that is purposely designed to make First Amendment rights illegal? He just got through lowering flags in the state in honor of an actor who played a mobster who needed therapy.
Should New Jersey have a law prohibiting therapy for mobsters?
