As Matt reported yesterday, Deputy Attorney General James Cole is being set up as the fall guy for the Department of Justice's subpoena of AP journalists' phone records.
In a press conference Thursday, Obama said he had "complete confidence" in Attorney General Eric Holder.
As The Washington Examiner reported, Obama did not apologize for the subpoena.
“I make no apologies,” the president said of his administration’s actions in the name of national security, including the squashing of government leaks.
Obama's defense combined with Holder's testimony yesterday shows that this administration will do anything to protect its top guys—including bringing down the lower guys on the totem pole. It's the same thing that happened with Hillary Clinton and Benghazi. They tried to protect Susan Rice too, but eventually realized that was futile and let her become the scapegoat.
The president fired the acting chief of the IRS yesterday, but the key word there is "acting." What a great way to protect the top guys: by blaming the person who's already going to be replaced anyway!
So once again, it looks like Eric Holder will escape unscathed.
