William R. Polk is a former member of the U.S. State Department's Policy Planning Council, where he was responsible for the Middle East. He is most recently the author of Violent Politics: A History of Insurgency, Terrorism, and Guerilla War, from the American Revolution to Iraq (HarperCollins 2007) and Understanding Iran: Everything You Need to Know, from Persia to the Islamic Republic, from Cyrus to Ahmadinejad (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009).
